El Ranchito - Huntington Beach

Monday night equals Mama's Avila Soup night at El Ranchito Restaurants. My El Ranchito of choice is the one in Huntington Beach - it's walking distance from my home. Truth be told, their mexican is not my favorite (sorry to offend any of you loyal Ranchit-ites), but I do enjoy their soup, so off we went.

The dining experience was less than par (slow service, had to ask twice for my soup accompaniments), but the soup was good. I wish I had a better adjective for the soup, but that's what it was: good. Not bad, not really exciting, but it was soup, and soup was what I wanted.

It's not a tortilla soup, if that's what you're expecting. It's a classic chicken soup made with chicken breast and rice, garnished with plenty of avocado, cilantro, onions, and tomatoes. There is actually so much chicken that I end up using the tortillas that it comes with to make a few tacos! I use the accomp
animents (Note: you must order these separately from the soup) to doll up my tacos just right. The accompaniments include more avocado, cheese, tortilla strips, diced jalapeno, diced onion, and pico de gallo. What I don't use on the tacos, I scrape into my soup bowl for some added flavor punch.

We couldn't eat our entire bowls -- too many stale chips with salsa (when you're hungry, you're hungry, right?) -- so dear Ben had leftovers for lunch. We were glad to leave, but glad we came. Next time, maybe we'll just focus on margaritas... then we won't care so much about the slow and inattentive service.
...and those are my Notes from the Napkin!
